Japan to probe whale meat 'theft'
Image

Officials in Tokyo are to investigate claims that shipping crews stole a tonne of meat from Japan's whale hunt.

Documents seen by the BBC confirm that public prosecutors will examine corruption allegations lodged by the environmental group Greenpeace.

It says crew members posted boxes of stolen whale meat to their homes.

Whaling fleet operator Kyodo Senpaku says small amounts of whale meat are routinely given to the crew as a "souvenir" at the end of the hunt.

A Fisheries Agency official said it had ordered separate internal probes by Kyodo Senpaku and the government's whale research body the Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR), which are due within a week.

ICR declined to comment on the prosecutor's case, due to its own internal investi

UN head to urge more aid in Burma
Image

United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon is travelling to cyclone-hit Burma to tour the devastated Irrawaddy Delta and meet with military ruler Gen Than Shwe.

Mr Ban said the focus should be on saving lives, not on politics.

Burma's rulers have blocked large-scale international aid but have now agreed to allow some UN helicopters to carry supplies to survivors.

Aid agencies say they are delivering about 30% of what they would like, 20 days after Cyclone Nargis struck.

'Critical moment'

The death toll from Cyclone Nargis currently stands at 78,000 dead, with another 56,000 missing.

Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes and the UN says that less than a quarter of the 2.4 million people affected have received aid.

Sales slowdown lifts buy-to-let
Image

The downturn in property sales is having a positive affect on buy-to-let, a survey from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) suggests.

Its survey of residential lettings says the number of new instructions to let property rose by 29% in the first three months of 2008.

This compares with a 2% increase in the three months before.

Weaker demand to buy houses has forced sellers back into the rental market, where yields are rising, Rics says.

"The sales market's loss is the lettings market's gain," said Rics spokesperson James Scott-Lee.

"Some would-be sellers are retreating from selling and letting or re-letting their properties as they wait for mortgage lenders to offer buyers more favourable lending criteria," he added.

Calabrian mafia's revenues soar
Image

The mafia in Italy's Calabria region has an annual income equivalent to nearly 3% of Italy's gross national product, according to a new report.

The report estimates the yearly earning of the Calabrian mafia or 'Ndrangheta at 44,000m euros (£35,238m).

It says that the criminal and economic reach of the group is not taken seriously by the Italian authorities.

The report shows that the Calabrian mafia is now effectively a multi-national crime corporation.

Drug profits

Analysing official data the Eurispes research institute puts the group's annual income at a staggering 2.9% of Italy's gross national product and more than that of Estonia and Slovenia put together.

Drugs account for more than 60% of that wealth.

Alongside its global reach, the
