Newlove killers granted appeal
Image

Two youths convicted of murdering father-of-three Garry Newlove have been granted leave to appeal.

Adam Swellings, 19, of Crewe, the ringleader of the gang which kicked Mr Newlove to death, will appeal against conviction and his 17 year sentence.

Gang member Stephen Sorton, 17, has been granted leave to appeal against his minimum 15 year term.

They were jailed after a court heard how they kicked Mr Newlove, 47, "like a football" outside his Warrington home.

Mr Newlove was attacked in August 2007 after remonstrating with a gang of youths who had vandalised his wife's car outside their home in the Cheshire town.

A third member of the gang - Jordan Cunliffe, 16, formerly of Warrington - was also jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum

A man has appeared in court charged with the assault and kidnap of British Army officer Robert Nairac.

Captain Nairac, 29, originally from Gloucestershire, was abducted by the IRA from Dromintee, County Armagh, on 14 May, 1977. His body was never found.

Mr Crilly appeared at Banbridge Magistrates Court and spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charges. He was freed on bail.

The accused was secretly filmed by the BBC last year as part of a Spotlight programme examining Captain Nairac's murder.

Objecting to bail, a police officer confirmed that the programme had been the trigger for re-opening the investigation and that much of the evidence woul
