Raikkonen sets the pace in Monaco
Image

Ferrari's world champion Kimi Raikkonen edged out Lewis Hamilton to set the pace in first practice for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.

Raikkonen clocked a fastest lap of one minute 15.948 seconds through the twisting street circuit of Monte Carlo - just 0.268 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

The Briton's McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen was third fastest with Ferrari's Felipe Massa just behind.

But Scot David Coulthard stopped his Red Bull after only three laps.

The practice session was red-flagged for 16 minutes because of a suspected loose drain cover on the track.

Both Raikkonen and Massa had predicted that Ferrari would match McLaren, who are traditionally strong in Monaco, this weekend and Raikkonen laid down his intent in opening practice.

Ronaldo future remains uncertain

Cristiano Ronaldo refused to confirm he will stay at Manchester United after Wednesday's Champions League triumph.

Winger Ronaldo, 23, has been repeatedly linked with a move to Real Madrid but United have insisted he is staying put.

"I don't promise nothing," he said. "I don't promise nothing to my mum, I don't promise nothing to supporters.

"I want to stay but the future - no-one knows. I want to stay. We are going to see in the next two weeks, I don't say I make a decision."

Ronaldo scored the opening goal in Wednesday's final against Chelsea but missed in the penalty shoot-out, before goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar won the trophy with a save from Nicolas Anelka.

Motherwell assistant boss Scott Leitch says neither he nor manager Mark McGhee have been approached by Hearts to become their new management team.

BBC Scotland understands Hearts' caretaker manager Stevie Frail is to leave the Edinburgh club.

Leitch has denied reports that he and McGhee will meet Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov next week.

"We've heard all the speculation, but no one has spoken to Motherwell about it," Leitch told BBC Sport.

Hearts, who finished the season in a disappointing eighth place, appointed Frail caretaker boss in January.

He had previously been in joint charge alongside Anatoly Korobochka.

Doubts over England away friendly

England's friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago on 1 June could be cancelled in a domestic row over rental terms for the stadium.

The country's Ministry of Sports owns the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

But the Caribbean nation's football federation (TTFF) are in dispute with them over advertising and rental fees.

Fifa vice-president Jack Warner, a TTFF special advisor, said unless the terms of the agreement were changed the England match would be cancelled.

"If the sports minister does not answer and withdraw this agreement, we have authorised our attorney to file an injunction to restrain the minister for imposing these conditions," he said.

"If the injunction fails, the match fails, I refund people their money and apologise to the world
