DISPATCH FROM SF | Timely and Provocative, Van Sant's "Milk" Stirs Californians at the Castro - indieWIRE

by Eugene Hernandez (October 29, 2008)

In a scene reminiscient of numerous moments from Gus Van Sant's new film, "Milk," guests arrived at the Castro Theater last night in San Francisco to the sights and sounds of a boisterous demonstration in front of the landmark venue. "Unfair! And wrong! No on 8!" a sizable crowd continually chanted, pausing occasionally to cheer an arriving celeb. The spectre of activism, hope and change hung heavy over the event last night in SF, coming just a week before the U.S. presidential election. The film itself, about iconic activist Harvey Milk, is itself political, depicting the birth of a gay rights movement more than thirty years ago in an around the San Francisco neighborhood that houses the Castro Theater.

Cookbook author not amused by Seinfeld's jokes - AP

A cookbook author involved in a lawsuit with Jerry Seinfeld's wife says she wasn't amused by jokes the comedian made last year on late-night television.

In federal court papers for a December hearing, Missy Chase Lapine says her 7-year-old daughter was upset after Seinfeld joked that people with three names James Earl Ray and Mark David Chapman, for instance turned out to be assassins.

Lapine claims Jessica Seinfeld got ideas for the "Deceptively Delicious" cookbook from Lapine's "Sneaky Chef."

The Seinfelds' attorney said Wednesday: "As a comedian, Jerry has a right under the First Amendment to tell jokes. Ms. Lapine, on the other hand, was not joking when she maliciously accused Jessica Seinfeld, who also has young children, of plagiarism, a charge th

China OKs film on sensitive Taiwan-Japan relations - Reuters

Taiwan's biggest local box office hit, a love story involving its former colonizer Japan, has been approved for screening in China despite Beijing's skittish view of Tokyo-Taipei relations, the director said on Wednesday.

Chinese authorities, who can censor films that go against government interests, will allow the award-winning "Cape No. 7" to be shown uncut to its huge cinema audiences, he said.

"I was really surprised," director Wei Te-sheng told Reuters. "I hope mainland Chinese audiences can look at a different culture with tolerance."

The film follows two Taiwan people who fall in love with Japanese, one of whom was involved in Taiwan's colonization between 1895 and 1945. Their stories reflect the tight bo
