MSNBC Films announced a deal for Dana Nachman and Don Hardy's "Witch Hunt," on the eve of the U.S. premiere of the film at AFI Fest in Los Angeles. The documentary, executive produced and narrated by Sean Penn, is described as, "the story of eight parents in Bakersfield, CA in 1984 who were falsely accused and convicted of child molestation by an overzealous district attorney."
An Oscar qualifying theatrical run is also in the works for next year, followed by a Spring '09 MSNBC premiere for "Witch Hunt," which debuted earlier this fall at the Toronto International Film Festival.
"What more could you wish for your film than to find a home on a gutsy, issue oriented, national television outlet?" said co-director Dana Nachman, in a stat |

A Los Angeles jury has begun deliberating a paparazzo's claim that actor Keanu Reeves knocked him down with his Porsche and permanently injured his wrist.
Attorneys for both sides issued their closing arguments Friday before the jury deliberated about five minutes and left for the weekend. Jurors will resume work Monday.
Photographer Alison Silva claims the star of "The Matrix" hit him with his car in March 2007 while Silva was trying to shoot photos of Reeves. Silva says he was knocked to the pavement and his wrist will never fully heal.
Reeves' lawyer, Alfred Gerisch, says Silva stumbled on his own after he put his hand on the car's hood.
Silva's attorney, Joseph Farzam, says his client seeks $640,800 in compensation.

Police confirmed Friday they found the gun used in the killings of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew, as the family's South Side community prepared a public memorial to say goodbye.
The .45-caliber gun was discovered Wednesday in a vacant lot in the West Side neighborhood where the body of Hudson's 7-year-old nephew Julian King was found a few days earlier inside an SUV. The bodies of Hudson's 57-year-old mother Darnell Donerson and her 29-year-old brother Jason Hudson were discovered in the family's home last Friday.
"The weapon has been positively identified through forensic examination as the weapon that was used in the homicides," police Superintendent Jody Weis said at an unrelated Friday news conference.

Joaquin Phoenix is quitting movies to focus on music.
Phoenix's publicist, Susan Patricola, has confirmed his earlier comments to TV's "Extra": The upcoming "Two Lovers" will be his last performance on film.
Says Patricola: "He has said that `Two Lovers' is his last. But this is not strange. Joaquin has been directing music videos and been involved in music for the last number of years."
Phoenix first talked about his decision to "Extra" this week while attending a fundraiser in San Francisco, abruptly ending the interview after the reporter wondered whether he was joking.
The 34-year-old star received Oscar nominations for his roles in "Gladiator" and "Walk the Line," for which he learned to play guitar to channel country legend Johnny Cash.
