No-Nonsense Guide to Configuring Conky
"The .conkyrc file consists of two sections: the first one controls Conky's appearance, while the second one determines what data to monitor. To separate these sections, Conky uses the TEXT marker. Since the .conkyrc file is just a plain text file, you can use your favorite text editor to work with it. The very first thing you have to do is to specify the update interval, or how often Conky "collects" the monitored data. This is done by specifying the update_interval option in seconds, for example: update_interval 1.0 or update_interval 3.0. Obviously, the exact value depends on how up-to-date data you need. On my Eee PC, changing the update interval doesn't seem to have any adverse effect on the performance, so I usually set it to 1 second. By default, Conky is designed to superim

Microsoft's Windows 7 Vista Replacement Plan
"And two, Microsoft is desperate to win its straying customers back from Macs OS and Linux-powered netbooks.

"If Microsoft is really serious about making amends to their customers though, this offer isn't enough.

"No, if Microsoft really wants to make its customers happy, they should do what my friend Jason Perlow suggests, "since Windows 7 is essentially a performance and usability fix for a defective product, I'm of the increasing opinion that a Windows 7 upgrade should be free to anyone who was conned into buying Windows Vista.""

Preservation

"There is a very big problem, though, with digital preservation. Many members raised that issue with me, and so I decided that we do indeed need to address that. A university professor, as it happens, is working on a digital preservation project with his students, and I have been offered an opportunity to pick their brains, and I'm definitely going to do that. Digital preservation is no mean trick, and just as Groklaw has been cutting edge in other areas, I want to make a contribution by doing all I can to make sure our work doesn't fade away. We put our hearts and souls into putting together this library of SCO, UNIX and Linux history, and libraries have their own requirements and standards.

"I would truly love to do both, because I love doing Groklaw, but I don't sca

5 Best Linux Distros to Convert Windows Users

"What does Linux Mint provide its users?
"Perhaps the single biggest difference between this distribution and others designed for new Linux users is that the developers are actually paying attention to what users are asking for. Unlike the alternatives, Linux Mint's latest features are often reflective of users speaking up and asking for a specific type of functionality. Other goodies include a lot of stuff that many people felt like should have been included with Ubuntu, at least as a discoverable option.

"What does PCLinuxOS provide its users?
Based on my experience, it seems that the kernel has received changes that allow it to work fairly well with hardware that might have been a problem with other distributions. But more than detecting hardware differently, i

A Call for a Linux Powered Wearable PC
"The first key item in this wearable PC is the PC itself. A device like this needs to be small, pocket sized preferably, with a good battery life, a reasonable amount of power, and a good feature set. Years ago, such a device was a pipe dream, given that batteries, processors, and even the so called "portable computers" were really anything but portable, powerful, or long lived. Yet if you look around you right now, that's exactly what we have. Powerful, portable devices with good battery life. Take for example your cell phone. Typically, most modern cell phones have more processing power than most PC's from the 90's could ever dream of. Even your iPod or PMP likely has more power than they did."
