I've not traditionally been much of a Twitter fan, once deriding it as "Wonder Bread."
I've increasingly found, however, that Twitter serves a useful function for me, fitting in between blogs and instant messaging as a "micro-blogging" tool, as Glyn Moody suggests. It's also a way for me to IM multiple people at once, without any near-term expectation of response. I now post to Twitter quite often.
Despite these benefits, the only way I've found to make Twitter work for me is by limiting the number of people that I follow. I follow fewer than 20 people. These are people (or companies) that I know well to actually care about what they think and what they're doing.
There are other people, of course, whose opinions matter to me, but I just can't follow them all |

CNN anchor Rick Sanchez is one of the most popular users on microblogging service Twitter, with nearly 40,000 followers and a Twitterholic rank in the top 20. Unfortunately for Sanchez, it looks like he fell victim to the phishing scam that has been plaguing the popular service for several days now.
In a "tweet" that has since been deleted, Sanchez's account displayed the message "i am high on crack right now might not be coming into work today"--and we're pretty sure that did not come from Sanchez himself. He has now posted a response tweet explaining that his account was hacked.
Over the weekend, reports began to surface that there was a password-stealing phishing scam making the rounds on Twitter. Disg |

Steve Jobs will not appear at Macworld as he recuperates from what he's calling a hormone imbalance. (Credit: James Martin/CNET)
Update 9:23 a.m. PST: This story was revised to clarify that Apple did not make any explicit connection between Steve Jobs' health and the decision for him not to give the Macworld keynote address.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs is lying low rather than giving his traditional Macworld keynote speech Tuesday, with health issues apparently a partial factor in the decision even as he and the company avoid an explicit statement to that effect.
In letter to employees, Jobs wrote this Monday:
For the first time in a decade, I'm getting to spend the holiday season with my family, rather than intensely preparing for a M |

Amazon Video On Demand will be coming to the Roku Netflix Player in early 2009.
Amazon's video service will become the first non-Netflix "channel" to be available on the Roku box. The service, formerly known as Amazon Unbox, offers more than 40,000 movies and TV shows.
While that dwarfs the 12,000 or so streaming titles currently available via Netflix--and includes many newer titles as they're released on DVD--they're available on a pay-per-view basis rather than the flat-fee subscription of the Netflix.
A mid-December firmware update included the promise of "a number of great new channels that will begin to appear on your player in early 2009." That implies that Amazon is the first of several additional viewing options that will eventually be a |

Beatles fans can now download the Fab Four's tracks legally. But there's one catch: they can only do it by subscribing to, and downloading, a podcast from Norwegian Broadcasting. According to a deal inked by the organization late last year, Norwegian Broadcasting can offer podcasts containing music as long as no more than 70 percent of the entire duration of the show contains music. Using that to its advantage, the organization has started offering daily podcast episodes that feature a three-minute discussion about an individual Beatles track and the actual recording of that track subsequent to the discussion. The podcast is available for free by subscribing via iTunes.

The best-selling game of all time (Credit: Nintendo)
VGChartz released internal data Saturday claiming that Wii Sports, Nintendo's sports title that comes bundled with each Wii outside of South Korea and Japan, is the world's best-selling game.
According to the report, VGChartz software data for the week ending December 27, 2008, found that Wii Sports "has now passed sales of Super Mario Bros. at 40.24 million units, making it the best-selling video game of all time. The game...reached that milestone after 110 weeks of sales."
To be honest, I'm upset that this day has come. I was sure it would happen eventually, but I never believed that it would happen so soon and at the hands of a game like Wii Sports.
The title held by Nintendo's |
