'Green' tag should be banished, says university

Green fatigue is now official.

Numerous environment-themed blogs and news sites over the past week have pointed to a statement put out by Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan calling for the demise of all "green" labeling.

Since 1975, the university has been taking nominations for words that need to be banned. The top vote-getters for 2008 were "green" and "going green." Also on the black list was the terms carbon footprint and carbon offset.

One nominater summed up his lack of patience nicely: "If I see one more corporation declare itself 'green,' I'm going to start burning tires in my backyard," said Ed Hardiman from Bristow, Virginia.

Web site Treehugger declares that the term green is "barely hanging

Lenovo rumored readying layoffs

Amid current pessimism over the global economy, more reports of layoffs have surfaced online.

PC-manufacturer Lenovo is reportedly laying off 200 staff in its Beijing-based headquarters, of which 10 or so are senior management, China Tech News reported Monday.

The report quoted an inside source as saying official cuts are still going through government channels for approval, but added Lenovo "may conduct large-scale adjustments in the Asia-Pacific region" as well.

A Lenovo representative dismissed the reports as rumors, telling ZDNet Asia the company could not provide additional information as it does not comment on speculation.

Software giant Microsoft has also been in the midst of layoff rumors. A CNBC report appeared Monday, saying the compan

Apple shares rebound on Jobs news

Shares of Apple rose as much as 4.6 percent in intraday trading Monday, following an announcement by co-founder Steve Jobs that he would remain as CEO while undergoing hormone therapy treatment.

The disclosure of a hormone imbalance as the reason for his health decline and that he would remain as CEO while recovering from therapy treatments propelled shares of Apple to as high as $94.91 during intraday trading.

That bump to the stock not only came on a day that the broader markets were in the red, but also returned Apple's shares within spitting distance to where they were trading two weeks ago, when the computer maker stunned Wall Street with its Macworld news.

In mid-December, Apple announced Jobs would forgo his keynote speech at Macworld and

Managing my Twitter existence

I've not traditionally been much of a Twitter fan, once deriding it as "Wonder Bread."

I've increasingly found, however, that Twitter serves a useful function for me, fitting in between blogs and instant messaging as a "micro-blogging" tool, as Glyn Moody suggests. It's also a way for me to IM multiple people at once, without any near-term expectation of response. I now post to Twitter quite often.

Despite these benefits, the only way I've found to make Twitter work for me is by limiting the number of people that I follow. I follow fewer than 20 people. These are people (or companies) that I know well to actually care about what they think and what they're doing.

There are other people, of course, whose opinions matter to me, but I just can't follow them all

Oops! Twitter phishing scam snares CNN anchor
(Credit: Twitter, screengrab by Ian Schafer (ianschafer.com))

CNN anchor Rick Sanchez is one of the most popular users on microblogging service Twitter, with nearly 40,000 followers and a Twitterholic rank in the top 20. Unfortunately for Sanchez, it looks like he fell victim to the phishing scam that has been plaguing the popular service for several days now.

In a "tweet" that has since been deleted, Sanchez's account displayed the message "i am high on crack right now might not be coming into work today"--and we're pretty sure that did not come from Sanchez himself. He has now posted a response tweet explaining that his account was hacked.

Over the weekend, reports began to surface that there was a password-stealing phishing scam making the rounds on Twitter. Disg

On eve of Macworld, Jobs talks health

Steve Jobs will not appear at Macworld as he recuperates from what he's calling a hormone imbalance.

Update 9:23 a.m. PST: This story was revised to clarify that Apple did not make any explicit connection between Steve Jobs' health and the decision for him not to give the Macworld keynote address.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is lying low rather than giving his traditional Macworld keynote speech Tuesday, with health issues apparently a partial factor in the decision even as he and the company avoid an explicit statement to that effect.

In letter to employees, Jobs wrote this Monday:

For the first time in a decade, I'm getting to spend the holiday season with my family, rather than intensely preparing for a M
