Apple and Nvidia are finally shipping a graphics card for owners of older Mac Pros who felt left out in the cold in January.
When Apple introduced the newest version of the Mac Pro in January, it offered Nvidia's GeForce 8800 GT graphics card as an upgrade option on those systems. Owners of older Mac Pros, however, were miffed that Apple said the cards would only work with the latest Mac Pro generation, because firmware in the card could only support the PCI Express 2.0 standard unveiled with the new Mac Pros.
The thing is, those cards were supposed to be backwards-compatible with older PCI Express standards. Many were irate that Apple appeared to be forcing them to buy a new Mac Pro to get the 8800 GT, but Nvidia said it would release an upgrade kit in due time. And it' |

The Open Source Initiative just announced the results of its 2008 board elections. The good news? I'm out. (I wasn't able to give the amount of time needed by the OSI--the OSI is a lot of work.)
The better news? Some fantastic new faces are in, namely Martin Michlmayr (Linux International, Debian, HP) and Harshad Gune (GNUify Conference, Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research in Pune, India).
I'm really happy to welcome Martin and Harshad to the OSI board, and to see the others remain (Danese, Michael, Russ, Ken, Alolita, Nnenna, Rishab, and Bruno). It's an excellent group of people, one well qualified to uphold the ideals of open source.

Online advert system Phorm could make the net less secure and breaches human rights, the service's creators have been told.
Phorm's bosses met with members of the public in London to discuss concerns around its controversial deployment.
Kent Ertugrul, Phorm's chief executive, defended the service, saying it would be a crucial revenue source for ISPs and website owners.
BT, Virgin and Carphone Warehouse have signed up to trial Phorm.
Phorm works by connecting a users' web surfing habits to a series of advertising channels in order to target adverts.
Keywords in websites visited by a user are scanned and connected to advertising categories, and then matched to particular adverts.
It means a user who has been visiting web pages with lots of reference |

Here's a fun tidbit that has come out of the Tesla Motors stories this week: ousted founder Martin Eberhard was the exec who first concluded that Tesla needed to turn its Whitestar sedan into a gas-electric hybrid.
It was back in the summer of 2007, said Daryl Siry, vice president of marketing at Tesla. Eberhard examined the technologies, the price of batteries and other factories and "came up with the idea" for making Whitestar a serial hybrid. Serial hybrids are different than existing parallel hybrids like the Toyota Prius. In serial hybrids, the gas engine only charges the battery. The car thus runs almost exclusively on batteries and has a longer range and lower price than an equivalent all-electric car.
Later, Tesla modified the idea slightly. It will come out firs |

For years, the Steve Jobs biography has been a staple of the technology business publishing press.
The genre has been highlighted by titles such as Alan Deutschman's 2000 book, The Second Coming of Steve Jobs and 2005's iCon: Steve Jobs, The Greatest Second Act in the History of Business by Jeffrey Young and William Simon. The latter was attacked by Jobs himself for being an unauthorized biography, and by Deutschman for being eerily similar to his own book.
There was also, of course, Forbes writer Daniel Lyons' (aka "Fake Steve Jobs") 2007 parody, oPtion$: The secret life of Steve Jobs.

Business is slowing a bit in the drive industry.
The Scotts Valley, Calif.-based company said it pulled in $3.1 billion in revenue for its third fiscal quarter, which ran from January through March, and $344 million in net income. Net income per share came to 65 cents.
While the figures for the January-March represents an increase in revenue and net income over last year, retail sales of drives and sales into the notebook market in the past three months came in at less than expected, said CEO Bill Watkins in a prepared statement.
The company, however, also lowered forecasts for the current quarter. Seagate says revenue will come to $2.85 to $3.0 billion while net income will come to 41 to 45 cents per share, excluding certain charges. Analysts have expected $3. |
