What's with a warning for a long running read only program?
Willie's "Getting the Most out of DB2 for z/OS and System z" blog.
That's the question I received from customer. They wanted to know why I was so hot to turn on the LRDRTHLD (Long-Running Reader) in DSNZPARMs. One thing led to another and we were into a full discussion on all three waning indicators in DSNZPARM. It got me thinking that there are probably others that don't want to do it my way that don't realize the advantages gained by using these ZPARM keywords. Of course, when I starting thinking that way, I think new blog entry.

DB2 has three safeguards in the form of DSNZPARM keywords. These safeguards monitor DB2 for “misbehaving” transactions—those that span a high number of log records, run for a long time without commits, or involve long-running reads. O

Do I UPDATE or INSERT? UPDATE or INSERT?... Why not MERGE?
Willie's "Getting the Most out of DB2 for z/OS and System z" blog.

You're writing a DB2 application program and the program needs to handle a piece of data without knowing if a record exist in the table for this piece of data. You can write a SELECT to see if it exist. If it doesn't, then you can INSERT it, if it does exist you can UPDATE it. Or maybe you could go ahead and do the INSERT and see if it works. You could check the SQLCODE and if the INSERT was successful, great. If it wasn't, then you could do an UPDATE instead.

Both of the above coding techniques require a possible SQL error to determine if the right action took place or if additional processing still needs to be completed. Both could also result in addition SQL executions to take place possibly holding

NYPD's Real Time Crime Center
Properly implemented technology can reduce police officers' reliance on paper reports and non-integrated databases, and help better identify crime patterns.
Here are some excerpts from the May 2008 issue Police Chief Magazine, in an article titled Stopping Crime in Real Time. It showcases how business intelligence can be applied to law enforcement. While the article gives credit to NYPD chief Raymond Kelly, this solution builds on the reforms instigated by Rudy Giuliani and William Bratton in the 1990s, including COMPSTAT.

The ability to fight crime in real time-that is the vision of New York City Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Raymond Kelly. Beginning his second term as police commissioner in 2002, Kelly knew that properly implemented technology could reduce police off

It's close, it's oh so close but DataFlux has pulled away from IBM and Business Objects to take the lead in the latest Gartner Data Quality Magic Quadrant.

Gartner has released the latest Magic Quadrant for Data Quality Tools.  Once again a vendor has generously pushed the report out to the public and for the second year in a row it's Informatica spreading the love.  Informatica has a press release Informatica Positioned In Leaders Quadrant In Data Quality Tools with a link to report at http://www.informatica.com/dq_mq/ that requires data entry into some name and demographic fields before you are taken through to the full report.

With both the 2007 and 2008 reports available in the public domain I've done a mashup between them, this image shows the 2007 position as
