LewisC's Random Thoughts

I was unzipping a set of files from a zip file in Vista Ultimate 64 using the built-in unzip. The individual files were not very big, 17.8MB but there were a lot of them, > 3000. The file system is NTFS. The funny thing is that the amount of time shown below is not the largest number it showed.

I actually waited for about 20 minutes but it was running very slowly. The time remaining was all over the place. I decided not to wait. I unzipped with 7-zip instead. I'm not really sure what the issue was but it was kind of funny.

A few questions about DB2 9 for z/OS
Willie's "Getting the Most out of DB2 for z/OS and System z" blog.
IDUG North America 2008 ended a few weeks ago. This conference, like IOD and SHARE before it, had lots of topics on DB2 for z/OS. Craig, Troy, and I have all been blogging about DB2 9 and there have been plenty of articles published on the subject. Now that lots of information describing DB2 9 has been made available, I would like to ask a few questions about Db2 9 for z/OS again. The following polls hit on a lot of subjects. They ask about features (the list is not all inclusive, there are lots of other cool stuff in DB2 9) and upgrade plans. Take a few seconds and let me know what you think.

Using chkconfig for configuring Oracle automatic startup and shutdown
Don't know how many shops I have been in that never seem to implement automatic startup and shutdown for an Oracle instance. When investigating the systems it is evedent that there has been some attempt to get this configured but never completed. I think I know the reason. Most everyone can easily read and get through the first few steps of configuring automatic startup and shutdown BUT it is the last step that always seems to confuse and never get finished.
If you read the Oracle documentation for this, the very first sentence states: “This chapter describes how to identify Oracle Database processes, and provides basic information about how to stop and restart them. It also describes how to set up automatic startup and shutdown of the Oracle Database.” The key word used in this q

Trip to Lucerne, Switzerland, to Present at IBM Symposium 2008

As I am starting to put together a number of different blog posts sharing some of the highlights from the wonderful Enterprise 2.0 conference event that took place last week in Boston, MA, here I am, once again, on the road, and without hardly any time to breathe in between. Yes, that's right! I am travelling again! Not even a full day back at home and today I am in Lucerne, Switzerland, for a day or so. Thus, as you can imagine, those highlights entries from the Enterprise 2.0 event will have to wait for a little while longer. But they will be coming around eventually. Not to worry. Along with a bunch of other draft blog posts that I will starting sharing once my travelling spree comes to an end, within the next few days...

So you may be wondering what I am up to in Lucerne,

Even better information about the DB2 9 Diagnostics Guide
Willie's "Getting the Most out of DB2 for z/OS and System z" blog.
This morning's blog post (June 13, 2008) had one method you might be able to take advantage of to get yourself a copy of the DB2 9 Diagnostics Guide and Reference (LY37-3218), but is it the easiest way? Is this the most convenient method? Maybe not.

Might there be a better way to just automatically get the most current copy of the Diagnostics Guide? Absolutely!!!.

It seems that the Information Development (ID) folks at Silicon Valley Lab (SVL) have what I consider a much better plan. It's not a new plan though. It's the same plan they used last year to get you all the updated version of the DB2 Version 8 Diagnostics Guide (see my March 5, 2007 post). You can get a copy of the most current DB2
