Using DB2 Connect
k_murli_krishna asked these seven questions on the DB2 list about DB2 Connect. Instead of providing a terse reply on the mailing list I thought it may be beneficial to blog the answers so that the others may find them useful.

1) I believe that DB2Connect is used to connect to host systems from non-host systems. Is this correct? Is this the only way?

That is correct but I do like to have an explanation that is more precise. DB2 Connect is a combination of application interfaces (APIs) and network infrastructure components that allow one to make SQL requests on a Windows, Linux, or UNIX machines against databases running on IBM System z (mainframe) and System i (AS/400). In other words, the data resides on the mainframe while application code that uses the data is depl

Productivity - The Bane of Digital Communication

Yesterday I was interviewed yesterday by Kristina Cowan at Payscale.com for an article on Social Media as a tool for Career Networking.  However, our discussion turned to digital communication and productivity - she thanked me for a good article idea - hopefully I can be interviewed for that too (well, Kristina, what do you say?)     ;-)

Then I had a discussion yesterday with a friend and business acquaintance about digital communication.  Here are some things we discussed:

Text messaging is mostly ineffective for making plans because lag-time in the back and forth - plus abbreviated messaging does not allow for rapid adjustments.  Make the phone call.  Here is a series of actual text between my daughter and I.  I was delivering

DB2 Videos - Educational, Entertaining, Now make your own
DB2 videos seem to be popping up all over the place lately. Personally I'm a big fan of the short video format. When it's done right it is a great way to spend 3-5 minutes and actually get some useful education about a particular piece of technology. You may already be familiar with channelDB2 which is full of these types of short educational videos. If not check out channelDB2.

IDUG also has some very educational videos. In addition to the free podcasts and webcasts they offer under their basic member area, they also offer hour long presentations from their conferences that have the slides synched up with a recording of the speaker. So not only can you see the material presented at their conferences you also can hear the speaker deliver the material (which is by far more useful

Fatwire announces Content Integration Platform
When I read about this here, I initially thought that it's yet another incarnation of what Fatwire used to call Integration Centre. But then I noticed that as part of this platform, they have included an EMC Documentum connector with plans of more such connectors.

I recently heard about an Alfreco Drupal case study and from my blog's access logs, I've after noticed people searching for "Filenet Drupal" and "Documentum Joomla" integration. There are numerous cases of "Sharepoint + Documentum" as well.

This clearly shows that Site Management and Content Management are increasingly becoming niche disciplines. Site Management is more about managing the end user experience while Content Management is more about the back end efficiencies. Business people need more control in t

Ab Initio - Parameter Kung Fu
Some of you periodically shoot a question about parameters, or how to handle them and make the best of them.

I've got another post here on some parameter issues, but here's a simple set of rules that can get you moving and keep you moving

1- never, ever, never use start or end scripts, just like you don't play basketball on the freeway - see the blog entry with "Pandora" in the title. the Edit/Parameters area is the place for custom and graph-level parameters, with environmental configuration always derived from the sandbox and project level parameters

2 - command-line parameters should be keyword-based, never positional, and always provide a default - It provides an automatic help prompt for an operator, but more important keeps an operator from having to do too
