For years I have been asked what kind of business I'm in. Even my family has a bit of trouble understanding what the methodology business is all about. Consequently, I tell people I'm in the computer business as it is easier for most to assimilate. Actually, I'm called upon to come into companies and help straighten out their systems messes and bring order out of chaos. As such, I like to think of myself as the Red Adair of the systems and software development industry. Today's the focus is on OSC and OE. There were a couple of fixes published this week that could be interesting if you are a fan (or user (or both)) of these tools.

Recap: Optimization Service Center (OSC) is a no-charge replacement for Visual Explain (VE) with a ton more function. Optimization Expert is a tool sold by IBM. The really cool part is that they look, feel, and behave identically; there's just more stuff you can do in OE. If you are a user of OSC, the advanced features not available (the stuff form OE) just doesn't show up. This may be the simplest and most straightforward path from a no-charge tool to it's full function for-fee big brother ever.

Response time monitoring is a very important aspect of application management. In a way, it is nothing new. People have been monitoring response time ever since the days of green screen mainframe terminal applications. The only variable is the technologies involved, both on the application and the tools for monitoring them.

When I speak with customers, I something get these questions about the pros and cons of monitoring response times of real user vs. synthetic transactions, also referred as passive vs. active monitoring, and whether one approach should be used over the other. The truth is both approaches are relevant and they complement each other. Here's why.

Real user monitoring is obviously important because it measures the actual experience of actual end users.

While tracking APARs this week, I came across a couple that were Hipers so I thought I would point them out. I know of a lot of customers that not only track all hipers, they try to apply them on a weekly basis. This works well if you are following a RSU maintenance schedule, something discussed here in the past.

And like every Friday, here I am again, folks, putting together this particular blog post to detail what my week has been like, trying to escape work related e-mail and divert, accordingly, most of the conversations into the social computing world.
