Computer Data Management Data Recovery
RECOVER command makes PIT recovery easier
There have been a number of questions lately on my backup and recovery postings which has been great. One of the questions was how to do recovery to get the database back to a specific point in time. It’s easier today than it has been in the past. The command to use is the RECOVER command which performs the restore and rolls forward the database to a given point in time (all in one operation).

Here is the short syntax
RECOVER DATABASE db_name TO isotime [USING LOCAL TIME | USING UTC TIME ]

There are more options possible but this is the basics. Simply specify the database name and the time you want to get to and DB2 does the rest. The default is that the time you specify is in your local system time. Optionally you can use the keyword USING UTC TIME to specify tha

How to Create, Use and Maintain DataStage 8 Parameter Sets

This is a three part DataStage tutorial on using the new version 8 Parameter Set functionality that shows how it works and adds some practical advice for how to use it.

DataStage 8.0.1 came with a great new function called Parameter Sets that let you group your DataStage and QualityStage job parameters and store default values in files.

There are some very good things about Parameter Sets:

You can group a set of related parameters together and add them in one click to any Sequence or Server or Parallel DataStage job and maintain them from a single parameter definition. Parameter Sets make Sequence jobs and Shared Containers easier and faster to build.  When you add a Server or Parallel job to a Sequence Job you have a lot less properties to set if b

What To Do Do If High-Tech Careers Are Doing Well or Not Doing Well

A recent report indicates the tech sector is doing well.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25338933/

Two thoughts about this.

The figures are based on 2006 growth numbers:
Compiling national data on any subject is a daunting task and it is virtually impossible to determine from this how the sector is really doing.  We are always looking in the rear view mirror when we analyze such data.
It is largely irrelevant to the individual:
The Economy of One philosophy trumps here.  If we are in a recession and an individual is gainfully employed, earning and saving, his economy of one is doing great.  If we are in an economic boom and an individual cannot find employment, his economy of one is struggling.

So, if the economy is booming/struggling, what d

Some tips for my fellow road warriors
Willie's "Getting the Most out of DB2 for z/OS and System z" blog.
I subscribe to a lot a "different" blogs and list. One such blog is something called Gadling; a travel web site... Actually travel is as close a description as I can come up with. This site has a little of everything about the world on it; lots of fun to read even when the stuff has nothing to do with anything I'm interested in.

Recently, Gadling has run a series of post with tips on acquiring and using your frequent flyer miles. I found the information they posted useful so I thought I would share it. It's good stuff to know if you travel every week like some of us or you only travel once or twice a year. You should always understand how to take advantage of your frequent flyer programs.

Do you do Oracle Automatic Memory Management?
©Gaetan Lee
Most of us by now, unless you are new to Oracle, are aware of the two memory areas: the System Global Area (SGA) and the Program Global Area (PGA). What I didn't realize, as I read through the Oracle 11g documenation that there is now three different ways to manage memory. It is actually quite funny as I have installed Oracle 11g quite a few times and never really noticed. I think it is because I've just been zeroing in on a few key terms and always select the same management option, not realizing there was a new one and always wanting to allocate the memory to Oracle myself.

Automatic Memory Management allows you to let the Oracle database completely manage the SGA and PGA memory for you. To let Oracle completely manage the SGA and PGA (automatic memory managemen
