DNA backlog may hamper JonBenet case

DENVER - Unless he has another brush with the law someday and a DNA sample is taken from him, JonBenet Ramsey's killer might never be caught.

Even worse, his DNA might already be in a police filing cabinet somewhere, still waiting, along with hundreds of thousands of genetic samples from convicted felons across the U.S., to be processed by a laboratory and entered into the national DNA databank.

The nation's DNA tracking system is beset with a huge backlog that could take years to clear. And in the meantime, law enforcement officials say, crimes are going unsolved.

"It's very, very frustrating because this tool is so powerful," said Norm Gahn, a Milwaukee prosecutor who helped pioneer the practice of filing charges against unidentified sex offenders based solely on the

Police arrest man suspected of killing wife, kids

MARIANNA, Pa. - Police said they arrested a man suspected of killing his wife and two young children in their rural home in western Pennsylvania on Thursday.

Trooper Robin Mungo said a daylong manhunt ended when police took Orlando Maurice Guarino into custody. She said he is suspected of killing his wife, Ashley Guarino, 22, and their children, 2-year-old Dreux and 11-month-old Orlando Jr.

Their bodies were found early Thursday in their home in the town of Marianna. A coroner ruled the deaths homicides and said it appeared they were asphyxiated.

Mungo said Guarino, 38, was being questioned and charges would be filed later Thursday.

Orlando and Ashley Guarino had separated recently, and she had obtained an order of protection a

Diplomat: Sex with teens OK in some cultures

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - An ex-diplomat convicted of having sex with teenage girls in the Congo and Brazil and taping the encounters is asking a judge for leniency, claiming that cultural differences in those countries make sex with girls more acceptable.

Gons G. Nachman, 42, pleaded guilty in April to possessing child pornography after admitting that he had sex with 14- to 17-year-old girls while serving as a consular officer in Brazil and Congo and documenting the encounters in pictures and videos.

The judge has agreed to delay Nachman's sentencing until Aug. 22 so that he can be examined by noted forensic psychologist Stanton Samenow. Defense attorney Stephen Stine said in court papers that a psychological examination might show that cultural differences led Nachman to believe t

Lawyer: Little evidence of drugs in cop cookies

LAKE WORTH, Texas - A teenager accused of delivering drug-laced cookies to a dozen police stations was the victim of overzealous officers who had very little evidence indicating drugs were inside the treats, his attorney said Thursday.

L. Patrick Davis said no traces of LSD have been found inside the cookies taken to police in Lake Worth, where Christian V. Phillips remained jailed on $75,000 bond on a charge of tampering with a consumer product.

"Clearly there's no LSD, and how long does it take to test a chocolate-chip cookie for marijuana?" Davis told The Associated Press on Thursday. "A lot of things don't add up."

Davis also contends the bond is too high and has asked a judge to reduce it. A hearing is set for Monday.

Pot in the air?
Phillips, 18, was

Polygamist sect leader back in Arizona jail

LAS VEGAS - Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs was back in an Arizona jail cell Thursday, amid lingering questions about what prompted his hospitalization in Las Vegas for treatment of a "weakened state of health," a sheriff's official said.

The 52-year-old leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was returned Wednesday to the Kingman, Arizona, jail, said Trish Carter, spokeswoman for Mohave County Sheriff Tom Sheahan.

"The obvious question now is what the problem was," said Carter, who said jailers were not told Jeffs' medical diagnosis but did not believe his condition was life-threatening. Authorities said he was having convulsions when he was found in his jail cell Tuesday before being taken to the hospital.

Jeffs was first treated

French man pleads guilty in art theft case

MIAMI - A French man pleaded guilty Thursday to attempting to sell four valuable paintings that were stolen last year from a French art museum in a brazen robbery by masked, armed thieves.

Bernard Jean Ternus, 56, admitted that he conspired to sell the paintings for about $4.7 million to buyers who turned out to be undercover FBI and French police agents.

Four of their meetings were videotaped and dozens of conversations recorded, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Hunter.

"Why are you pleading guilty?" asked U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz.

"Because I am guilty," said Ternus, speaking in French that was translated into English.

The paintings stolen in August 2007 from the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Nice, France, include two well-known Impressionist w
