Feds drop Sharpton tax probe

NEW YORK - Federal prosecutors have disbanded their criminal investigation into the financial dealings of the Rev. Al Sharpton and his Harlem civil rights group, the minister and his lawyers said Tuesday.

Prosecutors concluded that Sharpton’s substantial tax problems were better handled as a civil matter by the Internal Revenue Service rather than in criminal court, his lawyers said.

The IRS and New York state and city tax agencies claim that Sharpton owes well more than $1 million in back taxes and penalties. His organization, the National Action Network, also faces a hefty tax bill.

Sharpton said that both he and the civil rights group would pay off their debts, clean up their books and complete a reorganization intended to ensure the group’s long-term fiscal

Suspects found asleep on stolen goods

MONROE, Wash. - Police say a trail of pillows and backpacks led to two sleeping men who were arrested after a department store break-in.

Twenty-five-year-old Kyle Burress and 27-year-old Allen Pierce have been charged with second-degree burglary.

Police spokeswoman Debbie Willis says a break-in was discovered July 9 at a Fred Meyer department store northeast of Seattle. The two were still being held on bail Monday, and it was not clear whether they had lawyers.

Willis says police followed a trail of cardboard and items from storage containers in a locked area behind the store that led to the two men. One was sleeping in a stolen hammock and the other on a pile of stolen pillows.

Police photographed the men before waking and arresting them.

Willis says alcoh

Feds: Ex-anchor hacked colleague's e-mail

PHILADELPHIA - A fired TV newscaster was charged Monday with hacking into the e-mail of his glamorous younger co-anchor hundreds of times for more than two years, as leaked information about her personal life helped lead to her own downfall.

Federal prosecutors say former KYW-TV anchor Larry Mendte gained access to Alycia Lane’s accounts from home and at work — about 537 times between January and May alone — and shared some of the information he found with a reporter. Lane’s attorney said the motive was jealousy, but authorities were silent on Mendte’s motive and his method.

“The mere accessing and reading of privileged information is criminal,” acting U.S. Attorney Laurie Magid said. “This case, however, went well beyond just reading someone’s e-mail.”

Man convicted for accosting Elie Wiesel

SAN FRANCISCO - A jury in San Francisco on Monday convicted a 24-year-old man of accosting Holocaust survivor and scholar Elie Wiesel in a hotel elevator.

Jurors found Eric Hunt guilty of false imprisonment with a hate crime allegation. Hunt also was convicted of battery and elder abuse.

The 79-year-old Wiesel testified he thought Hunt was trying to kidnap him when he was forcefully pulled off an elevator Feb. 1, 2007.

Wiesel read comments allegedly written by Hunt calling the writer's accounts of the Holocaust "fictitious."

The jury dismissed charges of attempted kidnapping and stalking.

Hunt had pleaded not guilty to all the charges by reason of insanity. His lawyers say he faces up to three years in prison.

Mom sentenced for setting house fires

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Friends said Kimberly Wooten was the kind of person who would watch the church nursery on a moment's notice and beam with pride as she described her sons' accomplishments.

But they never saw the suburban mother's demons — severe mental problems that a psychiatrist said led her to set a series of fires that destroyed four homes and terrorized neighbors. She was ordered Monday to spend 13 years in prison for the blazes.

Wooten, likely wearing a wig, drove around her neighborhood, setting small fires in pine straw, grass or other vegetation, usually late in the morning or afternoon, prosecutor Robert Elam said. The last was set as she walked her dog.

All but one were put out quickly, causing minimal damage. But on March 22, 2006, Wooten set a fire that

Men sentenced for setting friend's crotch ablaze

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Two practical jokers are behind bars for setting their passed-out drinking buddy's crotch ablaze while boozing in Grover Beach. Matthew Craig Pillers and Jack Brent Nicholas Keiffer pleaded no contest to a felony great bodily injury charge.

Prosecutors say the 22-year-old Pillers, a parolee, was sentenced to two years in prison and the 19-year-old Keiffer got 45 days in San Luis Obispo County jail.

Elliot Tuleja was passed out when the men poured cologne on the man's groin and set him on fire on Jan. 18. Tuleja had second-degree burns on his testicles.
