I've been a happy KDE user for years, but never warmed up to Konqueror. (When it comes to web browsing, it's firefox all the way...) But last week, a tip from a friend guaranteed that an open Konqueror session is now a staple on my desktop. That's the title of a recent Computer World article. Not surprisingly, harassment was listed as reason number one. I can't really comment on this point since, as I've written before, it's not been an issue in my own IT career. (Which some may argue, is why I still have a career in IT).

I did find this quote interesting:

"...A woman cannot survive a failure. So they become risk-averse in a culture where risk is rewarded. Women would rather build a system that didn't crash in the first place, but men enjoy that diving catch and have a system of support that allows them to go out on a limb." Taken in context with the lack of mentors and a feeling of isolation, it's no wonder that people leave the industry and don't come back.

Open Source software

Open Source is one of the many buzz words circulating the IT fields these days. In our company as with most I've heard about the adage to provide solutions with incurring the least amount of cost is being asked of IT people. While there are those who still go with the older methodology, you get what you pay for, I am finding that to be less true when it comes to software packages these days.

I've started myself to use OpenOffice, both at work and at home. It is very comparable to MS Office and in a few areas I've found it to be better. Of course the cost is much better, but I realized the other night I can create acrobat files with it. Cool. The same functionality is there and it is compatible with most other packages' files.
