RIM Wants Canadian Encryption Company for $52M

OTTAWA - BlackBerry maker Research In Motion said on Wednesday it plans to buy Canadian encryption software company Certicom Corp in a deal worth about $52 million.

he offer, which comes one day after RIM cut its third-quarter profit and revenue outlook, represents a 76.5 percent premium over the closing price of Certicom stock on Dec 2, said RIM.

RIM said it is making the offer directly to Certicom shareholders because it has been unable to advance the transaction with management since starting talks in February 2007.

The offer is not subject to financing conditions and will be funded by cash on hand, said RIM. It expects to formally commence the offer by Dec 12.

The blogosphere took note this week when The Washington Post uncovered an Apple Technical Note recommending the use of anti-virus software on Macs.

That note is no longer up on the Apple site.

It seems now as if the note itself was older and heretofore unnoticed; though a copy dated June 8, 2007 is target="_blank">still online.

A version available Monday was dated November 21, 2008. But there's no reasonable explanation for removing the document other than Apple's concerns over the marketing implications of having it reported.

It then goes on to list Intego, Symantec, and McAfee AV products for the Mac.

This is a pretty low-key, technical endorsement, and as Krebs notes, Apple Store employees are still telling customers otherwise, as are Apple advertisements.
